Two new operating theatres to be built at Prince Philip Hospital

22nd December 2021

Lee Wakemans is proud to be acting as Employer’s Agent and Cost Manager for the delivery of two new operating theatres at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli.

Funded by nearly £20m from the Welsh Government, the development will provide two new operating theatres together with associated preparation rooms, anaesthetic rooms, changing facilities and a recovery area.

Once complete, the new facilities are expected to deliver capacity for 24 theatre sessions each week, supporting a range of specialities including orthopaedics, general surgery, urology, vascular procedures and laser therapy for varicose veins. The scheme is also anticipated to enable approximately 4,600 additional day-case procedures per year.

This significant investment will help address surgical waiting lists and ease pressure on healthcare services across the region, particularly following delays to planned care caused by the pandemic. In addition to benefiting patients across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, the increased capacity is expected to support the wider south west Wales region.

The project forms an important part of Hywel Dda University Health Board’s recovery planning and wider efforts to strengthen resilience and maintain planned care pathways.
