Significant Progress Made on £16M Health & Wellbeing Centre

30th Mar 2023

The Bevan Health & Wellbeing Centre, being built on the former Tredegar Hospital site, began construction in Autumn 2021, and is due to be completed in May 2023. It will  provide a comprehensive range of Primary Care, Community, Social Care and Wellbeing Services in one place for local residents.

Cardiff-based development consultants, Lee Wakemans, is providing cost management services to the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board on the development, acting as cost advisors for all the business case stages and securing full capital funding for the project. It is now actively managing the construction phase of the centre.

The new facility is being constructed around a restored part of Tredegar General Hospital's original structure, in the birthplace of Aneurin Bevan and the NHS. The project is part of a wider step change in healthcare delivery in Wales, and is one of 19 new integrated health and wellbeing centres proposed for Wales.

The Health & Wellbeing Centre will house two existing GP Practices working independently; Tredegar Health Centre and Glan-yr-Afon Surgery. The centre will bring a range of services for patients together in one place, including General Medical Services, Community Pharmacy and Community Dentistry, Community Services, Social Care and Third Sector Partners.

A series of mitigation measures were put in place to ensure the original Tredegar General Hospital site, which became derelict after closing over a decade ago, and is considered a conservation area, was treated respectfully. This included the incorporation of a permanent bat roost, in the new plans, to sensitively deal with the issue of bats.

Director of Lee Wakemans, Mike Hughes said, "It is great to have been involved in this scheme from the onset, and to work with the Aneurin Bevan Health Board on this significant project which serves as a future model for the delivery of health care services.

"As a company, we have supported the NHS in Wales for over 30 years with our expertise and have worked for multiple NHS Health Boards on flagship schemes through our healthcare services provision. We are looking forward to the completion of this project and the many benefits it will bring the community in which it resides".
