Significant Engineering Milestone Reached in Construction of Access Roads for new Velindre Cancer Centre

The construction of the enabling works for the new Velindre Cancer Centre has reached an engineering milestone with the lifting into position of the bridge deck beams, which will pave the way for the completion of the access road infrastructure. Once the works are completed, it enables the next milestone to commence in the delivery of the project.

The new centre will provide specialist and complex cancer treatment including SACT (systematic anti-cancer therapy), radiotherapy, and specialist palliative care, inpatient facilities, a specialist oncology assessment unit and outpatient services, radiology and nuclear medicine, and will promote excellence in cancer services and support international research and development.

Lee Wakemans is providing cost management services to Velindre University Hospital NHS Trust for improvements to and construction of the dedicated access route of the new Velindre Cancer Centre. The works comprise of dedicated highway access off M4 Junction 32 including a new bridge structure, emergency access from Park Road, improved pedestrian access links to Coryton Station, and drainage and utilities infrastructure to the new site.

Speaking of the recent development, Director at Lee Wakemans, Mike Hughes said, "The lifting into position of the bridge deck beams is a massive engineering exercise. The new infrastructure is a key part in creating permanent access to the new Velindre Cancer Centre being developed at the Northern Meadows site in Whitchurch, Cardiff. There have been significant challenges to overcome at every stage in the delivery and it's a testament to the teamwork of everyone involved in reaching this milestone."
