Celebrating 18 Years

1st Jul 2025

This month marks 18 years since Paul Wong joined Lee Wakemans, and in that time, he has become a cornerstone of our project management division. As part of this milestone, Paul took some time to reflect on his journey, the evolution of the industry, and what continues to drive his passion for delivering meaningful projects.

From Architect to Project Leader Paul joined Lee Wakemans in June 2007, following a 17-year career in architecture. Over time, he observed a shift in the industry where architects were increasingly stepping back from project leadership roles, as dedicated project management began to emerge as a distinct discipline. With a strong background in leading complex builds and coordinating multi-disciplinary teams, Paul transitioned into project management, formalising his experience with qualifications through the Association for Project Management (APM).

Shaping Lee Wakemans' PM Service Having known the Lee Wakemans team from his days as an architect, Paul recognised a natural alignment as the company moved from cost consultancy into broader project delivery roles, including acting as Employer's Agent. The synergy of project and cost management at Lee Wakemans has since grown into a trusted, repeatable service model with long-standing client relationships as proof of its success.

Project Highlights & Sector Expertise Among Paul's proudest achievements is the firm's role in delivering over 40 Community Diagnostic Centre projects across England--a vital contribution to the NHS at a time when the UK significantly lagged behind G20 peers in diagnostic access.

He also reflects fondly on the firm's long-standing partnership with General Dynamics, including the Merthyr Tydfil tank assembly facility built under a £3.6 billion MOD contract. Managing that phased, high-pressure delivery programme remains one of his most rewarding challenges.

In higher education, Paul highlights the excellent working relationship with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), where projects have combined complexity with mutual respect and teamwork, delivering real value for future generations.

Lessons in Leadership A theme that runs throughout Paul's career is the power of teamwork. "When we work together as one team - architects, engineers, surveyors, planners and contractors - that's when we achieve the best outcomes for our clients," he notes.

Paul has also been a strong advocate for maintaining a flat structure at Lee Wakemans, giving individuals responsibility while ensuring they feel supported. This team culture, he believes, is what sustains good work and long-term relationships.

Company Culture & Balance Paul fondly remembers pre-COVID traditions like "Fika Fridays" - casual lunchtime catch-ups that helped strengthen bonds across the office. Post-pandemic hybrid working has brought new challenges, but the team continues to adapt and support one another.

Outside of work, Paul prioritises a healthy work-life balance. He believes in fully switching off at the end of the day and enjoys staying active through racket sports like badminton - even if he jokes that younger players are starting to get the better of him.

Looking Ahead Paul remains energised by the future, particularly around transformative projects that combine built environment expertise with wider societal impact. Recent interests include supporting the development of neurological treatment centres in Wales, working with pioneering medical technologies that could improve countless lives.

A Final Reflection as Lee Wakemans celebrates its 40th year, Paul highlights another key milestone: Kevin Parry's 40th work anniversary with the business. "That kind of longevity and dedication says a lot about the company culture we've built here," Paul adds.

Congratulations, Paul, on your 18-year anniversary. Your leadership, commitment and vision continue to make a lasting impact at Lee Wakemans and beyond.
